BWB's Prentiss Darden has been employing innovative, holistic solutions to challenging issues related to food and the environment in Africa for the past 2 years. She now turns her attention to helping vulnerable youth in Botswana.

Garden Project-Botswana

From: Prentiss Darden

Since the  month of March I have been working with a new group of kids in a village outside of Gaborone, named Mochudi.  The youth come to a place called Stepping Stones for an after school program.  Most of the are orphans and vulnerable children between the ages of 13-19.  They come to receive study help, practice drama and dancing, receive counseling and meals, among other activities.  Once upon a time they had a garden.  They asked me if I would come work with the kids and teach them about organic gardening and permaculture to get it going again.

So far we have used the $500 donation from BWB to plant fruit trees, apply mulch, put up shade, and repair the fence to keep out neighboring chickens.  The kids there are so fantastic.  Some of them really take to it, and a lot of them show up each time I come.
